The Jack Tilton Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works that combine photography with embroidery by Dutch artist Berend Strik. The show of mixed-media works will be on view from November 11 through December 23. There will be an opening reception on Friday, November 11, from 5 to 7 pm; the artist will be in attendance. This is Strik's first major solo exhibition in New York.
“Lascivious Fortification, Shadow and Light” will feature new work in which the artist embroiders photographs or stitches photo cutouts onto fabric. Strik either photographs scenes or works with found photos, primarily of people and modernist architectural spaces and sews them by hand. His embroidery ranges from spare designs of minimal intervention to a horror vacui of clotted needlework that nearly obliterates the photographic image.
