The Jack Tilton/Anna Kustera Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Jeff Sonhouse from November 22nd through December 21st, 2002. Sonhouse’s latest work consists of portraiture. These figurative works portray fictitious persons, while also highlighting the uses of “masks” as subject material. Sonhouse’s covering over of, to use Sirman’s words, “historical black bodies” is meant to include social aspects of contemporary African American identity (especially as fictions) as well as classical and modern forms of portraiture. The paintings in this exhibition vary in relief and material, content and color, pattern and identity.
