Like many of his post cultural revolution contemporaries He Sen makes paintings depicting a world where youth culture perfectly mirrors the socio-political forces in play in contemporary China. In He Sen’s work, beauty and consumerism join forces to create paintings rife with social meaning. He Sen’s photo-realistic yet lush renderings of women with toys and cigarettes capture a generation caught between the innocence of childhood and the knowing, cynical gaze of innocence lost.
He Sen will have his solo debut in the US at the Tilton Gallery in September, 2008.
