Jiang Hu

.....

Jiang Hu curated by Huang Zhuan, internationally recognized curator and professor of art theory at the Ganzhou Academy brings together 30 of the most important Chinese contemporary artists of our time. The opening reception will take place on May 22 in New York, during Chinese Contemporary Art Week organized by the Asia Society. The exhibition will take place this spring in three venues: The Tilton Gallery at 8 East 76th Street, Kustera/Tilton Gallery on West 21st Street and Roberts & Tilton Gallery in Los Angeles. In December, 2006 to coincide with the International Miami/Basel art fair, a version of the exhibition will be on view in the 10,000 square foot loft space in the Miami Design District.

Jiang Hu can be translated literally as "rivers and lakes”, but its metaphoric meanings are rich and open-ended. Jiang Hu can mean simply "wild or unsettled region," particularly the out-of-bounds frontiers far from mainstream culture. In medieval literature the concept of Jiang Hu referred to an ideal fictional realm inhabited by itinerant outsiders, such as scholars, monks, fortune-tellers and artists who were said to have magical powers. In more recent times, the Jiang Hu refers to the underworld society whose members possess the gravity defying powers of flight and super-human martial arts skills as popularized in the recent film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In the context of this exhibition, Jiang Hu refers to the complex dynamics of contemporary Chinese art within the global art world.

For over two decades, the Tilton gallery has exhibited hundreds of contemporary artsts, many of whom, like David Hammons, Marlene Dumas, and Francis Alys to name but a few, have become prominent figures on the international stage.

The Tilton Gallery was one of the first New York galleries to focus on the Chinese avant – garde, exhibiting the work of Huang Yong Ping, Xu Bing, Ma Liuming, Liu Wei and others in the 1990’s before they had become important players on the international scene.

Now housed in a historic landmark upper east side townhouse, the gallery’s current exhibition program will continue to support our established gallery artists, as it remains committed to discovering and cultivating new talent from around the globe. The gallery will present six exhibitions a year, with a rotating emerging artist program in the gallery’s ballroom/Project space.

Jack Tilton also works closely with a number of individual collectors, advising them on building important collections of European Modern, Abstract Expressionist and contemporary art.
