Born in 1951 Ohio native Fred Holland was trained as a painter at the Columbus College of Art & Design in Ohio, and went on to work in theatre and dance, first with the Zero Moving Dance Company, and then for years, with Meredith Monk. Holland returned to making art in the 1990s working mainly in sculptural form.
For his solo show in the downstairs galleries at Tilton, Holland presents an installation crafted from such fragile, off-beat and disparate materials as Styrofoam, yams, soap, chicken feet, pearls and gold-leaf. In his installation entitled Various Styrofoam Walkers, 2007 Holland painstakingly re-creates medical paraphernalia designed to support us in old age and infirmity. Sculpted from flimsy Styrofoam these delicate and frail facsimiles ironically and heartbreakingly refuse to support us.
