Derrick Adams

....

The Jack Tilton Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of New York based artist Derrick Adams. The exhibition includes a video installation, drawings, and a sculpture that descends from the wall into a heap of corn flakes.

Through his colorful and fantastical multimedia work, Derrick Adams explores themes of escape and retreat. His work draws from American iconography and pop culture, confronting their impact on personality development and examining the relationship between the pure and the perverse in their imagery.

Urban wildlife and superheroes also play central roles in Adams’ work. In the city, he says, “the fantastical and mundane mingle to make us the more-than-human creatures we are. One endearing vestige from childhood, the superhero: part monster, part man, inspires us beyond ourselves to make us feel powerful, invincible, and maybe even hopeful. Or could the real attraction lie, not in their outrageous power, but in their inescapable vulnerability?”
A recent graduate of Columbia University’s MFA program and a Skowhegan alumnus, Derrick Adams’ work has been exhibited in numerous group shows in New York and in London.
